Silver Denarius of Mark Antony
In 31 BC, Mark Antony lost the naval Battle of Actium to Octavian and his general Agrippa. Just before this battle, he issued a famous series of legionary denarii. These named and honoured 23 legions, some by name as well as number. This series of denarii were struck from silver of a slightly lower purity than normal, and probably for that reason were not hoarded but spent, and tend to turn up in quite worn condition.
The design of all the legionary series was similar, a galley (ship) on the obverse, and a legionary eagle between two standards on the reverse.
Our featured coin was issued for the 11th (XI) legion.
