James I Unite
On October 20th, 1604, James proclaimed himself as "King of Great Britain", although the Kingdom of Great Britain, also known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain would not exist until the Acts of Union in 1707 during the reign of Queen Anne.
In 1604, James discontinued the issue of a gold sovereign as a one pound coin, and replaced it with a new coin known as a unite. This was probably a great example fo the use of coins as a means of PR or spin, a stratagem used on ancient Roman coins.
