Louis Napoleon Bonaparte became President of the Second French Republic in 1848. On January 14th 1852, he proclaimed a new constitution, and our featured coin was issued bearing his portrait. the reverse inscription clearly shows that it was a coin of the second republic.
Coins of this type were only issued in 1852. They show a bare-headed portrait of Louis, with the inscription "LOUIS-NAPOLEON BONAPARTE". The engravers name BARRE is below the head. The reverse design consists of the value "20 FRANCS" and the date "1852" in three lines surrounded by a laurel wreath. Around the outside of the wreath is the inscription "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAIS". The mintmark "A" appears below the wreath.
The edge is inscribed in raised lettering "DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE".
From 1853 to 1870, coins were issued showing him as Emperor of the French Second Republic.
