George VI on a New Brass Threepence of 1937

1937 Brass Threepence
This was a radically new coin design at the time of its introduction. It has been planned for the new coinage of Edward VII, who abdicated, having been uncrowned king from 20th January 1936 to 11th December 1936. George became king on 11th December, and was crowned on 12th May 1937. The old silver threepence was rather too small to be handled conveniently, and there was general demand for a coin of a more manageable size. The coin is dodecagonal having twelve sides, and was the first coin of its shape, and also the first coin to be struck in nickel brass.
The design on the reverse of the coin is a thrift plant, commonly called a sea pink.
