Mexican Silver 25 Pesos
The 19th modern Olympiad was held in Mexico City in 1968, and this attractive silver twenty five pesos coin was issued to commemorate the event, and presumably to sell to collectors to defray the costs of the games. Mexico has rich deposits of silver and gold, and has a history of issuing coins in these metals.
1968 was also the year of the Prague Spring, the student riots in Paris France.
Mauritius gained independence from Britain, and Nauru declared independence from Australia.
On March 18th the US government ended the gold standard. Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark was born on May 26th, and Martin Luther King died on April 4th.
