1996 - Coin of the Year -1996
Football World Cup 1996 Two Pound Coin
The design of the 1996 UK £2 coin is still growing on us. The field of both the obverse and reverse sides are gently concave, yet the reverse manages to convey the opposite impression, that of being convex, and optical illusion skillfully created by its engraver, making it look very much like a three dimensional football. Could this be one of the most under-rated modern coin designs?
The coin was issued to commemorate the holding of the Soccer World Cup in the United Kingdom, although we can't remember who won.
Otherwise 1996 seems to have been a relatively uneventful year. Dolly the sheep was born, and Quake, the computer game was released, neither of which events made it onto a coin.
