1999 - Coin of the Year -1999
Princess Diana Memorial Five Pound Crown
The issue of a crown, by now a £5 or five pound face value coin, was one of only five official Princess Diana projects. Although the much loved Diana died in 1997, it was not until two years later that her memorial coin was issued, unlike that for Churchill which was issued in the same year as his death. We may be wrong, but we believe this is only the second ever British memorial coin. The engraver has captured a very simple but attractive and youthful image of Diana, and it is likely that this will continue to be a very popular coin for a long time. It is somewhat unusual for having three dates on it.
The total solar eclipse occurred on August 11th. Alderney and Romania issued coins with an eclipse theme.
