Obverse of Vitellius Silver Denarius

Obverse of Vitellius Silver Denarius

69 - Coin of the Year - 69 A.D.

Silver Denarius of Vitellius
Although this coin is undated, it could only have been issued in 69 AD, because Vitellius only reigned as Roman Emperor for eight months of that year.
The obverse legend reads: A VITELLIUS GERM IMP AUG TR P.
Silver denarius of Vitellius. He was a longtime friend of many emperors including Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero, although so unpopular as emperor that he lasted only 8 months.
The reverse shows a bowl on a tripod stand with raven and dolphin. The legend reads XVIVIR SACR FAC, abbreviation of Quindecimviri Sacris Faciundis, a group of 15 priests whose duties included interpreting the Sibylline Books for the Senate.
