Coin of the Year - The Concept
We know from feedback that information pages on our other websites are very popular. One Sunday, having gone into the office for a few hours in the afternoon to add a number of new coin images to our "World Coin Photo Gallery", it occurred to me that a particular coin represented its particular year very strongly. But all coins have a date on them, we almost hear you say. It's not true actually, because before about 1551, most coins did not have a date engraved on them. Even since then, when all coins carry a date, some coins represent a particular date much more strongly than they represent any of the other dates in their range. This may be because it was the first year of issue, or perhaps it is the most common date of its type.
It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time
It seemed like a good idea to create a coin catalogue with a difference. Coin value catalogues already exist for most western countries, and also for world coins in printed form. Although these will eventually appear on the internet, the editors and publishers of these catalogues don't expect to produce their catalogues for nothing, they do it for money, as a business. People don't expect to pay for information they find on the internet. We believe that the "Coin of the Year" concept has never before been produced in printed form, and would make an interesting addition to the world wide web, and the information it contains is available free.
Existing Resources
This would not have been possible if it were not for the fact that we already have thousands of images of coins, so we had already done 50% of the work necessary to create this resource. It may take us years to find and photograph suitable examples of coins for every year.
Personal Choice
In parts the dates and coins we have chosen to represent each other are somewhat arbitrary, or chosen from personal preference. There is also an English bias, although in time we may add new images, change the selected coin for a particular year, or add extra ones to "busy" years, to give a better balance and a more international flavour.
Not For Sale
The coins on this site are not 'for sale', they are here purely to educate, amuse and entertain.

Search - Go To Facility
We are currently working on a script which will allow you to type in a year, and go straight to the appropriate page of our website, until then we hope you will not mind returning to the front page every time.
Bandwidth
Another reason for the creation of this site was to reduce the bandwidth usage of our existing commercial website, hence this non-commercial one.
